Oil Spill Cleanup- What Really Works!

The recent oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico has caught everyone’s attention around the globe. With the situation getting worse by the day creating, it has raised concern from everywhere. The catastrophe began with the sinking of the rig followed by the explosion. Later, it was discovered that there were two leaks which were actually leaking 5,000 barrels of oil per day greatly threatening the ecosystem as well as the livelihood of those who depend on the marine resources.

Have you ever wondered as to how the crew goes about containing and cleaning an oil spill of such high volume? There are various factors, such the spontaneous response of the crew, the intensity of oil spill, the techniques used in oil spill cleanup, and weather conditions, which affect the whole process.

In case of any oil spill, the containment and skimming method for oil spill cleanup greatly depends on how early the crew manages to reach the site. Use oil spill booms to prevent the oil from spreading and enable easy skimming of oil with the help of boats is one method used. These orange booms work as a barrier and stop the oil from spreading. But these booms often prove futile during unfavorable weather conditions.

Any new inventions, such as waste hair balls, straw gobs, and dried mushroom-bit, which may seem innovative and effective, will not help in immediate recovery as most of them are not approved by the government and they cannot meet the immediate logistic needs as well. Dispersants are also used as an oil spill remediation method. But the drawback with such dispersants is that most of them are kerosene-based and hence toxic.

Of all the techniques, bioremediation can be termed as the most reliable and safe method for oil spill cleanup. Since water and air are warmer throughout the year in the Gulf of Mexico, it will only speed the bioremediation process.

One such EPA-approved bioremediation product that not only aids in oil spill containment, but also in removing oil stains from clothes, shoes, boat, and land, is Oil Gone Easy S-200.

Danish solution to oil spill stopped by beurocracy?
I heard that the Danish had found a way to clean up the oil and put out water with only 5% oil, but the U.S. wont let them clean because of some rule about not being able to dump more that 1% oil into the Gulf. Does anyone know anything about this?

When they close the valve there will be a certain pressure they read (the reservoir pressure). The reason it will take time to say if the BOP worked or not is because they will have monitor that pressure reading and see if it drops or not. If it begins dropping it means there is an underground leak (a.k.a. fractured casing), and they have to open the valve and coninue with the relief wells. If the pressure remains stable, the valves stay closed and the well is secure.

@narezul they stopped the leak, Now they need to wait n see n make sure that it doesnt blowup, But the leak in gone, stopped.

It wouldn't surprise me if that were true. The Left hates success and it hates life.

  • WPMixer

@Lctsforce ya, hopefully it works out although im skeptical as this scenerio is kind of like a freight train running into the side of a mountain full speed with all that pressure.

  • WPMixer

They have screwed this up beyond epic proportions. Should’ve never sprayed Corexit. Should’ve evacuated the people. This sealing cap has sabotaged any hope of stopping the oil spill.
The oil is still coming up but not through the well. It’s seeping into the bedrock, lubricating the earth which could possibly cause plate movement, and compromising the earth’s integrity. Hopefully the relief wells are far enough to be drilling in solid rock.

i keep watching this and all i hear is theyre goin gto stop it finally and then theyre gonna start it again am i fucking crazy?

    @harveybirdmannequin
It also means even a nuke will soon not be able to seal the well because the soil around the well will be too loose to form the seal that is to come from the heat of the nuke explosion.
This was electioneering. Obama wanted the well sealed before the elections no matter the cost but the well head would’ve disintegrated eventually anyways. The Gulf, Eastern Seaboard, and Atlantic fishing grounds will be destroyed. There will be FAMINE! Katla will erupt and Europe can’t farm.

I'll argue it with you. I am former military so I was here trying to see if anyone had a question that I could answer.

I am currently an oilfield worker and BP is one of my companies customers. We had 2 people on the Horizon and we have people on the 2 rigs that are drilling the relief wells.

The only way they are going to be able to stop the flow is by completing a relief well. They are drilling two in case there is a problem with the first. They are projecting to reach the target by the end of the month and have the well under control within a week of that. They should have it all finished out by mid August.

As to your question, "is enough being done?" Everyone in the industry agrees that BP is doing everything within reason to stop it and no one else would do anything different as far as capping it is concerned.

The clean up effort is in my opinion debatable and will take decidedly longer. It took only 5 years for nature to fully recover in Prince William Sound after the Exxon Valdez spill. This is certainly worse than that but still not as bad as what the German u-boats did with our tankers along the eastern seaboard during WWII.

I have been to numerous rigs in that area and in some of the marshes in that region and I can say that getting to them is not an easy thing to do. That is part of the problem with the response effort.
    It will take time.

If you would like more info check out this site. http://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/go/site/2931/ If you went to BP's site they would refer you to this site. Take your time and go through the drop boxes. There is a wealth of info there.

Try and watch the Congressional hearings this afternoon. I have seen a transcript of what they are going to ask BP about. They should be sitting in the hot seat on this one.

Bet you didn't honestly think you would get such a true and comprehensive answer, did you?

No. This is the largest oil spill in the history of earth 200,000 thousand gallons a day. The oil spill is not only endangering the living of fishermen and our economy, but polluting the oceans and killing marine life which will have a affect on the generations to come in the future.

  • TruthSquad

If they are not stopping it. It is because they don't want to. I can think of half a dozen ways of doing so.
As one example run a metal pipe into it and pump in liquid nitrogen. Create a freeze plug. That would hold long enough to cap the pipe.

These people are not dumb. It is still spewing because they want it to.

@Lctsforce im sorry i didnt get all the way through the story

Mr Wells cautioned that the test had just begun, Thursday afternoon US time, and that there were still many milestones yet to reach before the company would be able to conclude that the cap could seal off the well and keep oil from flowing into the ocean, or alternatively, that the company would have to restart containment operations to collect oil from the well

CNN has done an impeccable job covering the oil spill.

Sixteen people were killed today in that flash flood in Arkansas and 36 are still missing.

Obviously, there is other news that needs to be reported too.

That's what "Fair & Balanced" REALLY MEANS!
